Pope Francis accepted the resignation of French Cardinal Philippe Barbarin from the government of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Lyon, as reported by the Holy See on Friday.
Barbarin was acquitted on January 30th on appeal, after being sentenced in the first instance to six months in prison for the alleged omission of denouncing sexual abuse against children committed by a priest of his diocese in the 1970s and 1980s.

After the first degree sentence, the resigning cardinal presented in March 2019 the resignation to the Supreme Pontiff, who on that occasion had rejected it. / PL
