Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected a proposal made to him in the 2000s to have a double to guarantee his personal safety, TASS news agency reported on Thursday.
The statesman clarified that passage in his life in the framework of the '20 Questions for Vladimir Putin' project, broadcast on television by TASS, in which he also referred to his relationship with members of the Government, his reactions to opposition protests and other several issues.
They made the proposal for a double in the beginning of last decade, but I refused to accept it. That idea came up at difficult times in the struggle against terrorism and envisaged the use of another person for travels to regions where the presence of the President was not safe, he recalled.
In August 2000, the then chief of Russia's Federal Service for Protection, Evgueni Murov, strongly denied the existence of doubles of the head of State and made it clear that they were myths and inventions.
Murov admitted that the security force often had to verify the conditions to guarantee the Russian president's protection, due to the threats of potential terrorist actions, at times when dynamite attacks were frequent in this capital.
During the interview, Putin also referred to issues of interest for the Russian population, such as brain drain, and noted the work being done in that regard to guarantee conditions in the country to prevent the departure of crucial experts. / PL
