The Duma (Russian lower house) approved Mikhail Mishustin's candidacy for Prime Minister on Wednesday, according to a proposal presented by President Vladimir Putin, following the resignation of Dmitry Medvedev's government.

Present in the room were 438 deputies, out of a total of 450. A total of 383 deputies voted in favor of Mishustin and 41 abstained.
'The Communist Party of the Russian Federation abstained from supporting Mishustin's candidacy. We do not know the composition of the executive and its programme,' stated Party leader Gennady Zyuganov, who recalled that the organization had not approved of the Medvedev government either.

Prior to the vote Mishustin, who until now has been head of the Federal Tax Service, met with the United Russia faction of the government and announced that he would make changes in the next government, while his focus would be the digital economy and national projects.

According to the leader of the United Russia bench in the Duma, Sergey Neverov, which holds the majority, Mishustin said he would discuss each of the candidates for members of his future cabinet with the parties represented in the lower house.
The new head of government indicated that changes would be made to the executive staff. / PL
