Sixty-three Canadians were traveling on board the Ukraine International Airlines plane that crashed near Tehran, the Iranian capital, killing 176 people.

'Tragic news regarding Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752. Our hearts are with the loved ones of the victims, including many Canadians,' Foreign Minister François-Philippe Champagne wrote on his Twitter account.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Vadym Prystaiko reported that the plane, with a total of 167 passengers and nine crew members on board, was also carrying 82 Iranians, 11 Ukrainians, 10 Swedes, four Afghans, three Germans and three Brits.

The tragedy of the Boeing 737-800 occurred hours after Iran launched a ballistic missile attack against Iraqi airbases housing US soldiers in response to the targeted assassination of Quds Force Commander Qassem Soleimani by the United States nearly a week ago.

Initial reports said they suspected a technical problem had caused the plane to crash. / PL
