Six million people, equivalent to the total population of some countries, will fall into poverty in Latin America by the end of this year, compared to 2018.
According to a recent study by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), entitled 'Social Panorama of Latin America,' this year will close with a total of 191 million people living in poverty in the region, of whom 72 million will be in extreme poverty.
According to the report, almost all those people who will be added to this year's statistics on the most disadvantaged, will fall directly into extreme poverty.
Poverty and extreme poverty are forecast to increase to 30.8 percent and 11.5 percent, respectively, by the close of 2019.
If these estimates are confirmed, there would be 27 million more people living in poverty this year than in 2014, and 26 million of them would experience extreme poverty.
Those most affected by this scourge are children, adolescents, women, indigenous people, people of African descent, rural residents and the unemployed. / PL
