At 10 am on Wednesday, June 23, the debate began in the UN General Assembly on the draft resolution "Need to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba."
Representatives of several countries are expected to intervene during this day, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Bruno Rodríguez Parrillas. Then, the draft resolution will be voted on for the twenty-ninth time.
The representative of Eritrea, the first to speak this morning, said that this claim by Cuba has been shared by most countries for many years. "The African Group will continue to reaffirm its full support for this resolution."
The representative of Niger, on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, warned that the blockade has brought disastrous consequences for the Cuban population, for example, in the financial and health sectors.
"The blockade represents an obstacle for its people and goes against our commitment to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in the 2030 Agenda."
On behalf of the 14 member states of the Caribbean Community, the representative of Haiti said that despite the fact that the nations have rejected this policy, almost unanimously, the Cuban people continue to suffer its impacts.
He reaffirmed his firm support for lifting the Blockade, "a situation that worries the Community," as it constitutes a flagrant violation of the rights contained in the Charter of Nations.
On behalf of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the representative of Singapore said that the organization reaffirms its full support for the resolution presented by Cuba and that it does not support the imposition of unilateral, economic and financial measures by the States United against the Island.
The representative of Azerbaijan and on behalf of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries stated that during the last 30 years the General Assembly of the United Nations has spoken out against the blockade. He also indicated that the Blockade contravenes the principles of international law and the charter of the United Nations.
The NOAL demands the US government to end the blockade. It also affects the well-being of the Cuban people. “In recent years there has been an increase in restrictions against the country; more than 50 measures were approved during 2020 at the time of the pandemic. The banking sector has been very affected, the persecution of financial transactions has not stopped,”he said.
Meanwhile, the representative of Guinea said that the group of 77 and China regretted the policy of the last government of the United States, whose firm intention was to reinforce the Blockade.
