With the theme "Ozone for life" Holguín marks today the International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer with the implementation of various actions that contribute to the elimination of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) until the year 2030.
Norkis Ochoa Aguilera, specialist for the Ozone Program in the eastern territory, said that in a decade Cuba will be free of these substances (HCFC) in correspondence with the country's development plans and the international commitments established in the Montreal Protocol.
According to the results presented to date, in the province 54 entities have signed the voluntary declaration agreement for the elimination of the ozone layer depleting substances (ODS), of which four have achieved the National Award Free of SAO granted by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma).
This year, the Hotel Sol Río de Luna y Mares, Hotel Brisas Guardalavaca and the Company of Nickel Services in Holguín deserved this recognition.
The Combustibles Marketing Company (Cupet), the “Lázaro Peña” Cigar Factory, Cervecería Bucanero SA; Holguín Hydraulic Research and Projects Company (Raudal) and Cuban Air Navigation Company (ECNA UEB Holguín), among other entities, achieved positive results in the gradual elimination of ozone layer depleting substances.
The program of activities also included a training program with the participation of 146 technicians from the state and non-state sector and the strengthening of a collaboration agreement between the Territorial Delegation of Citma and the Provincial Directorate of Education aimed to develop Good Refrigeration Practices Courses.
On the other hand, the business sector, coastal communities, tourism facilities and Community Centers for Environmental Education (CCEA) have developed reforestation activities, sanitation of the coastline, broadcast of special bulletins, video conferences and educational talks, among others.
In 1994, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the 16th of September of every year as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. In 1987, it was signed the Montreal Protocol, the first major global agreement on an environmental issue. Since then, the states have dedicated the day to promoting the reduction of polluting substances.
