The Frank Pais international airport in Holguín on Tuesday received the certification to resume operations in the post-COVID-19 stage, after complying with the biosecurity protocols established to operate international flights.

Specialists from the Ministries of Public Health, Tourism and Transportation, the Institute of Civil Aeronautics of Cuba (Iacc) and the Cuban Aviation Corporation (CACSA) granted the certification after an inspection of all areas of the Holguin’s terminal.

According to Miguel A. Peña Peña, general director of the airport, experts evaluated the conditions created to guarantee the measures established for the prevention, confrontation and control of the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, including the taking travelers’ temperature upon arrival and departure; physical distancing and disinfection of hands.

Specialists also verified the existence of health advertising in the facility's halls, as well as the workers’knowledge of the procedures and measures contained in the biosafety protocols at the country's borders.

"For this reason Holguín complies with the necessary requirements for the post-COVID-19 stage and can receive international flights and passengers, it all depends on the situation of the issuing markets," said Peña.

The Holguín airport underwent renovation and maintenance of the two terminal areas during the two months of interruption of operations due to the pandemic.

Works carried out included the location of a kiosk for self-checking and an information screen for passengers, the rehabilitation of the runway asphalt, expansion of the aircraft parking platform and the construction of a room for fire control, with the highest international standards.

Also, works are carried out in the completion of a new airport control tower, which will be equipped with the most modern technologies.
