The protection of the coastal ecosystems of the province of Holguin is a priority for the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment in the eastern territory, as part of the implementation of the Tarea Vida Plan.

This strategy is mainly aimed at mitigating the effects caused by climate change, including saline intrusion, intense drought, sea level rise and temperature.

Melaneo Maden, founder of the environmental project Ecoarte, told the ACN that the main protection measures include the collection of solid waste, the re-use of nylon bags and the reforestation of mangroves located in the mining municipality of Moa.

He highlighted as the most important action the reforestation of mangroves, as they constitute natural barriers to the penetrations of the sea and the force of the winds caused by high intensity hurricanes.

The programs for the preservation of Holguin's coasts also include the care of the Nipe Bay, the largest pocket bay of Cuba and a reservoir for biodiversity in the eastern region of the island, he said.

Tarea Vida includes 73 locations prioritized for its implementation and in the province of Holguin it extends to the coastal municipalities of Antilla, Banes, Rafael Freyre, Gibara, Frank País, Mayarí and Moa.
