The José Manuel Guarch Delmonte National Research Award was presented today to Dr. Nuvia Artigas Almarales, as part of the 32nd Ibero-American Culture Festival taking place in the city of Holguín.
Artigas Almarales told the Cuban News Agency exclusively that her research, titled "A Racism with a Scientific Varnish: Modernity in Institutionalized Cuban Anthropological Thought," delves into the conceptions of the country's leading intellectual figures during the second half of the 19th century and the idealized European modernity, which denied the role of Black and mixed-race people in the formation of national identity.
Given the relevance of the topic, the jury awarded a mention to Ernesto Álvarez, from the province of Matanzas, for the work entitled The Aboriginal Communities that inhabited the historical region of Cárdenas, with which the compilation of information on the original populations, the archaeological sites and the material findings of the territory is achieved.
In the 2026 Ibero-America in Us Competition, the prize was awarded to Cosme Casals Corella for his work titled "Caridad Rodríguez Cullel and Elena Guarch Rodríguez, Two Women for their contributions to Cuban Archaeology," both of whom have made significant contributions in a field where men typically predominate.
Casals Corella's work is groundbreaking given the historical void surrounding women's contributions and also reveals the consistent presence of women in archaeological studies in Holguín.
Jhoannis Rodríguez, from the province of Sancti Spíritus, received an honorable mention for his work "Journalistic Texts as a Source and Means for Teaching Contemporary World History: A Methodology for Developing Critical Thinking in Cuban Pre-University Education," due to the scientific novelty of his work on the reinterpretation of media in historical reasoning.
The awards ceremony was part of the activities of the Ibero-American Congress of Thought, which includes conferences, presentations, book presentations and panels from October 25 to 27. (Source: ACN)
