In the province of Holguín, the continuity of the educational process for children in remote communities, such as those in the Plan Turquino, is ensured despite the current energy crisis in the country.
With the country's largest school network, over 800 rural primary schools operate in hard-to-reach areas of municipalities like Frank País, Sagua de Tánamo, Cueto, Mayarí, and Moa, as reported by Miguel Leyva Fernández, head of teaching at the General Directorate of the sector.
To adapt teaching to the context, the provincial system implements measures prioritizing direct instruction and personalized guidance during the 2025-2026 school year, he commented.
These include schedule adjustments based on the Third Improvement, which uses non-class sessions for sports, cultural, and complementary activities.
Flexibility in entry and exit times is promoted, along with stronger links between schools and homes to monitor student progress and adapt to changes. This ensures efficiency and constant communication amid challenges.
For children with special needs in the Plan Turquino, 19 students were relocated to nearby classrooms with trained teachers. In Frank País, for example, several were integrated into regular primary schools with personalized attention, while other isolated special education boarding schools maintain stable operations when transfers are feasible, as detailed by Yudelkis Rivera Olivares, head of the department.
Rural schools serve as key sociocultural centers in hard-to-reach areas, and maintaining the school year represents a commitment to educational equity for all children in Holguín. (Source: ACN)
