The General Health Directorate in the eastern province of Holguín is implementing a comprehensive program for the diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson's disease through the use of science and technological innovation.

According to Yanot Gonzalez, a specialist in this area, said that techniques are being proposed to determine which patients are candidates for surgery, taking into account the conditions of each case.

He noted that these procedures make it possible to establish parameters in the behavior of the pathology applicable to specialized neurological consultations.

Despite the limitations caused by the tightening of the United States' economic, commercial, and financial blockade against Cuba, which limits access to equipment, these programs are functional, even with diagnostic methods from developed countries, he explained.

In the territory, the dissemination of preventive behaviors such as physical exercise, a healthy diet, and the early detection of risk factors are also prioritized, the expert added.

Parkinson's is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disease worldwide, and it behaves similarly in Cuba, making it one of the most common causes of disability and motor limitations in adulthood.

Its characteristics include slow development, nonspecific symptoms, and most diagnosed cases take several years to develop, making prevention very difficult. (Source: ACN)
