The Provincial Meteorological Center of Holguín leads a comprehensive program to address climate change, with the aim to mitigate its negative impacts in the territory.

Zulema Reyes Bermúdez, deputy technical director of this entity, told ACN that the project includes the evaluation of damage caused by intense droughts, severe atmospheric phenomena, and rising sea levels on vulnerable ecosystems and communities.

According to Reyes Bermúdez, these researches provide methods to boost agriculture and industry adapted to climate variations, promoting sustainable development and resilient communities.

Analyzing hazards, vulnerabilities and risks in mountainous and difficult-to-access areas, with special attention to biodiversity protection, are also among the priorities of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment due to the high endemism of the territory, said the expert.

She explained that in the last two years, ecosystem services have also been identified in the Bahía de Naranjo Protected Natural Landscape, valuing their economic potential in recreation, tourism, research and biodiversity.

The program also includes training leaders and community members, along with environmental education plans that encourage reforestation and proper solid waste management.

The Holguín Provincial Meteorological Center also monitors atmospheric pollution, weather assessments, sustainable food production and agronomy.

Continuous monitoring of air pollution, weather assessments, and promotion of sustainable practices in food production and agronomy reflect a multidisciplinary and community-based approach to strengthen resilience against climate change in Holguín. (Source: ACN)
