Cuba's Vice President, Salvador Valdés Mesa, toured centers of economic interest in the province of Holguín to evaluate food production in the region.
Valdés Mesa was accompanied by Joel Queipo Ruiz, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and first secretary in the province, as well as other authorities and representatives of organizations.
During his tour, he focused on several key sites, including the Agroindustrial Company in the municipality of Mayarí, which covers 35,000 hectares and involves over 3,000 usufructuaries and 14 agricultural cooperatives.
Valdés Mesa highlighted the importance of water and land for boosting production, but also emphasized the need to improve contracting and machinery maintenance to increase production, particularly in crops like rice, where nearly 100 hectares have been planted to date.
The Vice President stressed the importance of filling markets with products to combat inflation and considered the possibility of directing part of the production towards export.
He also visited a rice production area in Manacal and the Fernando de Dios sugar mill, where he addressed the progress of the sugar harvest and the challenges facing the industry, such as technical failures and issues with fuel and electricity.
Joel Queipo Ruiz, stressed the need to consciously plan the destination of each production to ensure supply and industrial development.
The province of Holguín has a municipal self-sufficiency plan for 2025, aiming for 30 pounds per capita, although eight popular councils have yet to reach this level.
