WFP donates food to vulnerable people in Holguín

The World Food Programme (WFP), part of the United Nations, is helping to ensure a healthy diet and adequate nutrition for vulnerable population groups in the province of Holguín by delivering a new food module.

This donation, which is being distributed for the fourth time in this region, is made up of essential products for a balanced diet, including two kilograms of rice, one kilogram of grains and one liter of oil, which will benefit priority sectors of society, Orlando Chaveco Pérez, WFP monitor in Holguín, told ACN.

The group that will benefit is made up of more than 41,000 people in a situation of economic vulnerability and nearly three thousand pregnant women, who are acquiring this module free of charge.

To carry out this work, a survey of all beneficiaries in each municipality was carried out and the transportation of the module and its prompt arrival to the distribution sites was guaranteed, a task in which entities such as the Ministries of Domestic Trade, Labor and Social Security and the Food Group have participated, he explained.

In the case of pregnant women, they were included from the moment they were recruited by the doctor's offices and the family, with the objective of strengthening the woman's diet as soon as possible in such an important period as pregnancy, for which reason they also worked together with the Public Health sector, he commented.

With more than six decades of ties with the Caribbean nation, the World Food Program promotes the nutritional security of the Cuban people through the materialization of agroecological projects, humanitarian aid in the event of climatic events and support to entities dedicated to social protection.
