Provincial Defense Council meets in Holguín

The Provincial Defense Council (CDP) of Holguín, met on Sunday to specify the measures to be adopted to mitigate the possible effects of a meteorological event located close to the region, which can cause intense rains in the territory.
The specialist from the Provincial Center of Meteorology, Lucía García, said that the hydrometeorological event that has strong nuclei associated with activity of showers, rains and electrical storms which are approaching eastern Cuba with probable effects on the province, which may be locally intense between Monday and Tuesday.
In videoconference with the Defense Councils of the 14 municipalities, it was assessed the work to protect the population and secure material resources in each territory.
The planned plans are activated to evacuate the population to safe places, especially those who reside in areas prone to flooding, especially those areas near the river banks and water reservoirs.
Joel Queipo Ruiz, president of the CDP, pointed out the need of safeguarding people's lives, increaing risk perception, keeping the population informed; as well as the food supply, medical personnel and everything necessary for the areas that may be affected by river flooding.
He indicated paying special attention to soil saturation, especially in municipalities such as Moa, where flooding was reported due to the recent rains caused by the passage of Hurricane Oscar , as well as in communities located downstream of dams, river banks and low areas with difficult drainage.
Tourism will maintain the vitality of its hotels, campsites located in areas of possible damage were closed and others will be used as evacuation centers.
On the other hand, health authorities monitor the epidemiological situation, since arboviruses and diarrheal diseases increase with the rains.
Manuel Hernández Aguilera, vice president of the Provincial Defense Council, warned about the necessary protection of all economic objectives and emphasized the observation of reservoirs, which in most cases have the possibility of overflowing.
