The city of Holguín will host on April 6, 2025, the first Workshop on Archeology and Early History of the Caribbean, the only one of its kind in the country, with the aim of delving deeper into the life and customs of the Cuban aborigines.
The meeting, based at El Yayal site, located on the outskirts of the head city, will have the participation of Cuban and foreign researchers, in addition to the involvement of the Güirabito community.
Hiram Pérez Concepción, president of the provincial branch of the Union of Historians of Cuba (Unhic), said that the program will address topics related to eating habits, changes in settlement patterns, introduction of plants and animals and transculturation, among others.
He highlighted the relevance of this event for the socialization of information related to these topics and to delve into the main aspects of the economy and worldview of the populations and their interaction with other tribes in the area.
On this occasion, the event is sponsored by the Pedro Rogena Camayd Credit and Services Cooperative, the provincial and municipal directorates of Culture, the Unihc and the Central Eastern Department of Archeology.
It will also recall the 480th anniversary of the relocation of the Hato de Holguín from the founding site of Yayal to Cayo Llano, the current location of the eastern city, where socioeconomic development began to the present.
Holguín has several archaeological sites in its geography, including Chorro de Maíta, located in the municipality of Banes and one of the most important aboriginal cemeteries found to date in the Caribbean area, where the types of burials of the first inhabitants of the largest of the Antilles can be observed.
