The protection of coral reefs, highly vulnerable to climate change, is the main objective of a project developed in the province of Holguín, where one of the largest reserves in the Caribbean area is preserved.
José Miguel Rodríguez Ricardo, specialist and coordinator of the program, told the ACN that these ecosystems are sensitive to indiscriminate platform fishing, the variation in water temperature and the proliferation of macroalgae on the seabed.
He highlighted among the main actions the monitoring reef areas to evaluate the level of resilience and the cleaning of the seabed, especially in the summer months where there is a large influx of visitors to the resorts.
The training for the management of these spaces in specialized centers and the replanting of varieties of the acropora genus and other fragments derived from the corals themselves with a high survival rate, are also amng the actions carried out.
