The incorporation of technological packages to agriculture in Holguín is one of the objectives of the international project Ecovalor, focused on the economic valuation of the ecosystems of several Cuban provinces to promote sustainable development.

This initiative includes the incorporation of natural fertilizers and irrigation systems, which allow improving soil conditions and optimizing crops through increasing yields of tons per hectare, told ACN Roberto Alejandro García Reyes, an Agriculture official in the territory.

He highlighted that these facilities extend to the municipalities of Banes and Gibara, where planning actions are also carried out aimed at reducing the impact of saline intrusion, intense drought and other negative effects of global warming.

In parallel, the creation of agroecological farms is promoted in the mountainous area, to boost the cultivation of root vegetables and vegetables using natural fertilizers and sustainable techniques, together with the economic incentive for these producers, he noted.

The province also has more than 200 irrigation systems installed as part of Task Life, a plan of the Cuban State to confront climate change, which contributes to local self-supply.

Since 2018, the Ecovalor project, financed by the United Nations Development Program, promotes ecosystem conservation actions in the provinces of Las Tunas, Camagüey and Matanzas and their economic valuation as a tool used in decision-making at different levels, and in the case of Holguín it includes the integration of science, tourism and agriculture.
