After the heavy rains in recent days, the reservoirs in the province of Holguín are at 78.5 percent of their filling capacity.
Iliana Amat Almaguer, director of Water Balance and Networks at the Hydraulic Exploitation Company, told ACN that the dams for the water supply system of the provincial capital, Cacoyugüín, Gibara and Güirabo, have increased their volume to five, 21 and seven million cubic hectometres, respectively.
The San Andrés, Santa Inés, Tacajó, Birán, Jagüeyes and Mayarí and Cacoyuguín dams are spilling water, while the micro-dams of Mayabe, Piti Fajardo, Colorado and Santa Rosalía, in Holguín and Rafael Freyre, are close to spilling, for which the established surveillance actions are carried out, she explained.
On the other hand, a maintenance and renovation program is being carried out with the aim to reduce the risks of flooding in areas close to rivers, streams and drains, common to this type of weather phenomenon.
Recent rains have caused damages to the Mayarí-Birán canal, due to the collapse of the access bridge, landslides in areas surrounding Buenaventura, and evacuations have been reported in low-lying areas of Mayarí, Urbano Noris, Sagua de Tánamo, and other towns in the eastern territory.
This weather situation is due to a low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico, which maintains instability and humid conditions in eastern Cuba; therefore, the Institute of Meteorology recommends that the population in vulnerable areas remain attentive to the Civil Defense guidelines. (Source: ACN)
