The Frank País International Airport in Holguín celebrated on Wednesday, the Civil Aviation Worker's Day, with a notable recovery in its task to serve aircraft, passengers and cargo in a stable manner, after the suspension of its air operations due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Miguel Andrés Peña Peña, general director of the Holguín air terminal, pointed out that at the end of 2022, they served 2,843 aircraft, almost 93 percent from abroad, and sold more than 12.3 million liters of turbo fuels, 11.3 of them corresponding to the export of services to foreign airlines.
He noted that the indicators reaffirm the performance of the entities of the aviation system in the territory, such as the attention to 292 thousand 22 passengers, and demonstrate the progressive restoration of the aeronautical sector in relation to the previous year, including the resumption of the Cubana de Aviación airline.
Among other achievements, Peña highlighted the work of the general ground assistance service assistants, who handled 291,126 pieces of luggage, some 6,404 tons, often operated under adverse weather conditions and late at night.
In the celebration, several workers were awarded the José María Pérez Capote Distinction, with 20 and 25 years in the sector, and two were awarded the 8 de Octubre Seal, the highest recognition granted to its members by the National Association of Innovators and Rationalizers.
More than 15 airlines currently operate at the Frank País International Airport in Holguín, including Sunwing Airlines; in addition to Transat, Air Canada, WestJet, Cóndor, Neos and América Airline, among others, which favors a gradual increase in operations to achieve more than 50 weekly flights.
