At the end of the 2016-2020 stage, about 12 investments were carried out in the province of Holguín with the aim to reduce contamination by liquid waste, as part of the actions to protect the environment in the eastern territory.
The investments included the waste treatment systems (STR) in the "El Jobo" Mill, the Agroindustrial Citrus Company and the Agropecuaria Holguín-Las Tunas, located in the municipalities of Sagua de Tánano, Banes and the provincial capital, respectively, due to their negative impact on the environment, told the ACN Norelis Peña, deputy delegate for the environment.
Works also include the construction of an oxidation lagoon in the "El Yayal" prison, the assembly of an aggregate mill in the Pilón quarry, in the municipality of Mayarí, as well as the expansion of the treatment systems at the Meat Company Felipe Fuentes, in Holguín, she said.
Investments also prioritize the sanitation of the Nipe Bay through the evacuation of waste from industries and institutions near its basin.
The program for the eradication of polluting sources began to be implemented in Cuba since 2014 and has among its goals to promote a coherent work system between the provincial delegations of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA) to the ordering, conciliation, monitoring and control of these wastes, with priority in the facilities that discharge the residuals into the rivers and the coastal zone, added Peña.
Holguín has identified 100 entities with an environmental license for the management of hazardous waste and more than 74 percent of the investments necessary for the eradication of pollutants are concluded, in execution or planned in the economic plans of the agencies.
Liquid waste or wastewater is defined as the combination of water and waste from residences, public institutions and industrial, agricultural and commercial entities, to which certain volumes of groundwater, surface and rainwater can eventually be added and constitute the main cause of the deterioration of the water supply sources and one of the main environmental problems at a global level, according the encyclopedia Ecured.
