The Mountain Research Station of Mayarí (EIIM) has included two projects in the Territorial Program for Sustainable Development of the Mountains in the northeastern province of Holguín.

"Both are aimed at generating working tools for the socioeconomic development of mountain communities and providing methodological instruments that contribute to the sustainability of the forests in Sierra Nipe Cristal and their adaptation to the effects of climate change," explained Berty Juan, communicator at the Center for Environmental Research and Services in Holguín (Cisat).

Elaborating, directing and executing projects, as well as providing scientific-technical services to respond to research needs at the Turquino Manatí Plan, from the social, forestry, ecological and environmental areas, are among the objectives of the EIIM, which marked its 33 anniversary on March 9th.

The specialist added that the state scientific service for the development of the management programs of the Mensura Piloto protected area is developed there, which contributes to strengthening the management capacity of the administration, to ensure the availability of human, material and financial resources.

“It also contributes to relationships with key stakeholders; maintain and strengthen the surveillance and protection system, with emphasis on forest fires, in prioritized sectors; and carry out actions to control erosion and the negative effects of invasive alien species. It also promotes environmental education actions in nearby communities and implements projects aimed at eliminating important information gaps,”she added.

Belonging to the Cisat, the Mayarí Mountain Station was conceived as the idea of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, under the name of Station for the Conservation and Development of the Mountain (ECODEM).
