The University of Holguín expands its joint collaboration programs in research areas with the sugar company of the eastern territory in the cultivation of sugarcane, as part of the agreements between both institutions aimed at achieving higher yields per hectare in this crop.
The ongoing project takes place at the Cooperativa 28 de Septiembre in the areas of the Cristino Naranjo sugar mill, in the municipality of Cacocum, starter of the agro-industrial operations of the last harvests in the province.
Vladimir Álvarez Sánchez, professor of the department of Mechanics at the Faculty of Engineering and main author of the project, explained to the ACN that the application of this initiative is showing the first results with average yields between 100 and 120 tons of grass per hectare, more than double the levels registered in the last harvest in the eastern territory.
To achieve this, a new sugarcane sowing system is used based on technologies that enable a more comprehensive growth of the plantations, one of the limitations that prevent achieving higher volumes of raw material to be ground during the last sugar harvests in the province, he said.
The insertion of this project within the sugarcane strategy of Holguín is among the agreements of AZCUBA and the University in the development programs until 2030 in the field of scientific research, Álvarez Sánchez added.
In this way, he said, it will be feasible to achieve higher volumes of sugarcane in each harvest, whose commercialization profits will be destined to finance the manufacture and improvement of the means required for the proper functioning of this project.
Reina Salermo Escalona, director of the Holguín Sugar Company, noted that the research work carried out by the Holguín center of high studies responds favorably to the problems raised about applying investigative variations such as sugarcane cultivation in response to the demands of the economy to boost sugar production.
