The installation of a 16-slice computerized axial tomography (CT) scan at the Territorial Oncology Center in Holguín opens a new stage in the diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumors in patients from the provinces of Holguín, Las Tunas and Granma, due to the high technological possibilities of the German-made equipment.

This CT scan is the second of its kind installed in Cuba so far and the first to be synchronized in the imaging process with the radioactive planning process for radiotherapy treatment; in addition to having other advantages related to the quality and capacity of studies.

The new medical technology is a gateway to new technologies that can be installed for cancer treatment in the Cancer Center, located in the Vladimir Ilich Lenin university hospital, inaugurated on November 7, 1965 by Commander in Chief Fidel.

Dr. Julio Yamel Verdecia Reyes, general director of the health institution explained that the equipment firm SIEMENS, purchased by the Cuban Government for more than one million dollars, is yet another example of the country's political will to continue improving the care for cancer patients.

For his part, Dr. Luis Mario Zaldívar Pérez, a specialist in Radiology, explained that “the tomograph allows studying any body region and oncological pathology. It can reach large areas of the body in a single exposure, which contributes radiation savings for the patient, a higher level of radiological protection, while no part of the body is beyond its exploration capacity”.

Other advantages of the new equipment installed is the synchronization of this system to the entire hospital network and other institutions in the province, such as the surgical clinical hospital Lucía Íñiguez Landín and the pediatric hospital Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja, where it will be possible to view any of the stored images.

Zaldívar Pérez referred to the cost of a study of this type in other countries, which ranges between 900 to 1,300 dollars; although in certain countries a simple type one costs about 780 USD, but without the medical report, which is charged for the single made to go through the team.

Medical services are free for all Cubans, even if they are highly expensive like those in the specialty of Oncology.
