Malignant tumors, main cause of death in Holguin

Cancer mortality remains the leading cause of death in the province of Holguin, where 2 157 157 deaths occurred for this reason at the end of 2019, with the increase of 35 deaths compared to 2018.
 
This disease has similar behavior in nine of the 14 municipalities of Holguin (Gibara, “Rafael Freyre”, Banes, Báguanos, Cacocum, “Urbano Noris”, Cueto, “Frank País” and Moa), while seven municipalities have a higher risk of mortality for this cause.

The male sex was the most affected with 1, 278 deaths, 59.2 percent of the loss of life due to cancer, mainly those located in the lung, prostate and intestine.
 
Other causes of death are heart disease, influenza and pneumonia, cerebrovascular diseases, accidents, chronic pathologies of the lower respiratory tract, arteries, arterioles and capillaries, cirrhosis and other chronic liver conditions; suicide and glomerular; as well as the renal diseases.

The municipalities with the highest risk of mortality are Gibara, Banes, Holguín, "Urbano Noris" and Mayarí; and the male sex persists as the most affected with 56, 7 percent of the total deaths.

There was an increase in premature death (30 to 69 years old), mainly due to heart disease in 2.5 percent, malignant tumors in 2.9, diabetes mellitus in 22.2 and bronchial asthma 0-64 years at 99.9 percent.

In Holguin, heart diseases are the second cause of deaths, while ischemic etiology is the main cause of expiration, as well as acute myocardial infarction.

Holguín, a province of more than 1 032 000 inhabitants, reports a life expectancy at birth of 79.8 years in both sexes, although in men it is 77.9 and in women 81.8.
 
The population under the age of 19 represents 21.9 percent and those aged 60 and over 20, 6, within that group those 80 and older constitute 3, 6 and the centenarians 0.01 (153) , this indicates that the population pyramid maintains an accelerated rate of aging and low level of reproduction.
