Holguin for Better Assistance of the Infertile Couple

The Territorial Center of Assisted Reproduction of Holguín will work to achieve more than 50 percent effectiveness this year, which would help to increase the number of births in the eastern province, where the birth rate is 10.1 per thousand inhabitants of the general population, lower than that of 2016.
In this care unit, affiliated to the university hospital Vladimir Ilich Lenin, some 11, 033 cases were treated during 2017 in the low complexity service, higher than the 8, 840 of the previous period. They also exceeded the number of spermograms, inseminations and laparoscopic, endoscopic and abdominal surgeries, which allowed 109 pregnancies with 95 births, including one twin birth.
 
In addition, 237 infertile couples benefited from high technology, 36 more than in 2016 with at least one of the procedures in practice for this Center with coverage for the five eastern provinces and Camagüey, among them follicular aspirations and embryonic transfer, to achieve 45 clinical pregnancies and 17 biochemical ones against 13 of the previous year, with 23 born by In Vitro Fertilization (FiV).
 
Until now, the medical team of about 20 workers reaches 31.6 percent of clinical pregnancy effectiveness by IVF, a figure that they hope to overcome from the creation of new conditions in the center, such as a room in the Central Interventional Unit of Lenin Hospital, for videoendoscopic surgery, including diagnostic and surgical hysteroscopy.
 
The patients had to perform these procedures previously in Havana and with the start-up of the operating room they are evaluated by the GPs themselves and submitted to the corresponding procedures according to the results of the study.
 
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) began in Holguín on July 12, 2014 and to date there are more than 20 children born by this method of a high cost, but in Cuba it is free, as is all medical attention to patients.
