The results of the scientific "complicity" of two Holguín women have begun to cross provincial borders. The idea for the project arose in January 2020, when one of them was struck by the COVID-19 figures reported in China.

The doctor, with several years of experience in medical care and a Master's Degree in Biological Safety in Human Health, recalled that one of the viruses studied was SARS-CoV, for which she was aware of the possibility of a pandemic affecting it.
Based on this knowledge, Alma Torres Gómez de Cádiz Agüero began to "weave" in her mind the hypothesis of how a natural product could be used to counteract the consequences of COVID-19.

"

Involved in the study for two months, it was in March 2020 when I began to be clear about which drug can be used according to its action on the pathophysiology of disease complicated by cytokines”.

The Science Advisor at the Holguín Municipal Health Directorate recalls that at that time the only laboratory in Holguín in which she could undertake the study was one from the Ministry of the Interior (Minint), for which she sought support from the Bachelor of Biology and Criminalistics Researcher, Major Rosario Iserns Hernández, who did not hesitate to accept the challenge.

In this way, the two women began the research project "Safety and Efficacy of the natural product "CBA-100", as contributory to the treatment of patients with COVID-19.

“We took time in the research, because a product that is going to be used by people must meet the Critical Path of the World Health Organization. Multiple pre-clinical investigations: demonstration of the product's properties, Phytochemical Screening, quality control and above all, the Toxicological study, which was carried out at Cenpalab, BioCubaFarma, in Havana. Now we hope to encapsulate in CIBHO, to undertake the Clinical Trial”, explained Alma.

The researchers hope to start Phase I of the Clinical Trial in August, to prove that “it is a natural product, with anti-inflammatory and immunostimulant and antiviral properties, as contributry for the treatment of asymptomatic and mild patients with COVID-19.

This research result has been presented at various events, such as ExpoCiencia-2023, among others held in Holguín, as well as the 8th Technological Research Meeting at the University of Seville, Spain, about which the doctor indicated that "it was checked the profile of safety, toxicology and pharmacology of the medicinal plants from which it is obtained, which is a target of scientific entities around the world, due to the various pharmacological actions it possesses”.

This project has been published in "Phytochemical screening", as a chapter of the Book: Synergy of STEM Research. Editorial 3 Ciencias, Alicante, Spain.

It has also had the support of various organizations, such as Cenpalab, to carry out the Toxicological study and FARMOX in the screening and quality of the product, while BioCubaFarma donated the 250 mg capsules for the study.

According to the technical data sheet "CBA-100" eventually decreases the viral antigenic capacity, by inhibiting specific enzymes. Also, it would be used as a complement to solve deficit of anti-inflammatory and immunostimulant drugs in chronic inflammatory conditions, immunological deficit, allergic, autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases”.

In the same way, the economic impact of the application of the "CBA-100" will be presented in the short, medium and long terms, as its safety and efficacy are observed, and new positive results are provided, to solve health situations for which it has ample possibilities, according to the specialists.

The use at times when the blockade imposed by the United States of America prevents Cuba from purchasing medicines, it would reduce imports in these areas. In addition, it has the potential to constitute an exportable item in the country's Pharmaceutical and Biotechnological Industry.

The product, being totally organic, does not affect the environment, to which are added its antioxidant properties, which help to improve the soil where it is grown, by reducing the levels of cadmium and phosphorus, among other heavy minerals.
