Cuban National Civil Defense authorities announced the upcoming people’s Meteoro exercise May 21 and 22, aimed at reducing disaster risks in the event of tropical storms and other natural, technological and sanitary phenomena.

Division General and Civil Defense Chief, Ramon Guerra, gave instructions for the drill to take place in all Cuban territories. He asked defense organs, the armed forces and the interior ministry to assess predictions about the upcoming hurricane season in the Atlantic, which starts June 1st and is expected to be active this year.

Measures to counter possible increase of Aedes aegypti mosquito infestation during the rainy season, actions to counter the effects of drought and forest fires along with actions to keep fighting the current COVID-19 pandemic, were also included in the instructions passed by the Civil Defense Chief.

The exercise will strengthen capacities against quakes and will put emphasis on the preservation of economic resources and the education of the people about how to act in the face of natural phenomena in tune with the civil defense measures.
