Cuba plans to install, until 2028, 92 photovoltaic solar parks with the capacity to generate 2,000 megawatts (MW) of power (more than 20 MW each) and, for this, diggings are being carried out in the chosen places, and resources are guaranteed for their assembly and completion, once they arrive in the nation.
Thus was reported at a press conference held yesterday by the Minister of Energy and Mines (Minem), Vicente de la O Levy, stating that there are contracts for the generation of energy from renewable sources, which are signed and in progress, which will allow Cuba to recover from the delay to reach 24% penetration of these technologies, before 2030.
He stated that this path will make possible to move towards sovereignty that will mean stopping importing 750,000 tons of fuel.
"We have chosen to get out of the crisis with our own resources, despite the energy situation the country faces," he said, and explained that they have focused on seeking independence from fuel imports, consuming domestic crude oil and gas, and complement this effort with the use of renewable energies.
He acknowledged that there have been very bad months on the Island due to the lack of fuel, although the result of the maintenance carried out by the Electrical Union to recover the technical condition of the thermoelectric plants has allowed breakdowns to be reduced.
This made it possible in the last quarter of 2023, the availability of thermal and gas generation to be greater than planned, he pointed out.
Even under these conditions, the strategy is not to give up on planned conservation actions because, otherwise, "when we have fuel, we would not have thermoelectric power."
